Today I hunted a strip of ground that I've been hunting for many years. Over the years I've found old wheats, Indians and Barber dimes.

Today, I thought I'd run out there for an hour or so to see if there was still anything left.. and sure enough, I was able to pull a couple keepers out.

1903 V Nickel
1953 D Wheat

I'm really starting to get the hang of the old nickels with the new SE. The XLT would read nickels alittle differently, and the signal would always be pretty iffy until I opened a hole. The SE seems to see the nickel real nice without disturbing the ground. I have my butter zone on the smart find where I like to see those nickels, and it's quite accurate. I'm hoping that I'll be able to nab a few of these older nickels in the near future.

I still need to get a barber for my 'year' goals though.

Enjoy the pics.

Nice finds!

I have yet to find anything old. I hope to find some now that I got the SE. My local parks are very small and not sure if they have been hunted but you got to assume so. I just inquired the other day about MDing the parks and I got a thumbs up. So Im excited to see what I can find. I going to focus first on areas with little or no traffic there are nice areas like near the creek and other areas of the park that is not used, Im hoping that its still the orignal dirt and such from the old days. My town goes back to the 1850's but its well delevoped now very few dirt areas left.

Try to think positive.. and start finding Wheat pennies. Once you find the wheats, you'll know that good stuff is there for sure. Wheats are always my barometer for finding coins. If you find wheats, that'll tell you that old stuff is there, and good chance that the site hasn't been picked to death. Also pay attention to the depth of your coins. If you find a 1920 Wheat at 3", that should give you a guide where Indians will most likely be (ie: 4-5").

Get to know your town and area. I know the typical depths of coins in my area. Knowing these things can help you hunt 'em out.

Good luck. Keep asking questions.. and keep practicing! The more you hunt, the more you'll find.
