I've been swamped with work the last few days, but was able to sneak out today for an hour. My mind wasn't in the 'zone' like I usually like to be when I'm swinging the coil, but I was able to pull out a couple of keepers.
1903 Indian Head
1906 V-Nickel
The Indian Head was pressed up against a old curb and saw some abuse over the years being next to the curb and some rocks. The V-Nickel (another site all together) came out in nice shape. I'd say this is the best V-Nickel I've been able to recover this year. You can even read the 'Liberty'.
Thanks for looking

Nice finds! What do v's register as on your detector?

What detector do you use? I use Minelab Explorer SE, using smart find.. so I don't go by digital numbers, but cursor position. The position was a little above where nickels fall, and the signal was flutier than I like. Usually, when the tone is super jingly, it's usually a pull tab or bottle cap.
I have an article discussing deep nickels with the Minelab...

I too use a minelab. The x-terra 30. I have a low nickle count compared to other coins. The few that I have pulled were newer and shallow (<3"). They gave a steady reading. I read your article just now and suspect I may have passed on a few thinking they were trash. Pull tabs seem very hot on my detector ( loud steady tone), but beaver tails send it into a scale frenzy. When it does this I almost never dig. Also there is a lot of iron in the ground here. About half the time I run in all metal mode and have an almost constant -4 tone. But, I am new (less than a month) and still learning.

Hello Arkwater
For the most part, the items that 'fool' me for nickels are..
- folded beaver tail pulltabs (not straight, and not with the pull ring)
- wadded foil
- metal around pencil erasers
Those definitely sound like the quality nickel tones I'm after. This way you can 'hear' what tones I'm after. Not sure if the tones are the same with the SE as X-Terra.
The biggest piece for nailing it is the pinpoint. I can't stress it enough. Today, I took note of my pinpoint sounds. All sounds that sharply cut as I drift from the target were junk. All the targets that gradually drifted at a steady rate ( and ID'd as 'nickle' ) turned out to be the Buffalos.
Today, I wanted to make a conscience effort and dig all 'nickel-style' tone/id, but paying attention to the pinpoint sound. All targets dug were deeper than 4". I believe this is due to a couple of things.
1. the size and weight of the nickel makes a larger target.
2. corrosion of the nickel offers a larget halo for the coil.
Good luck with your hunting, and post your questions.
Thanks!
